Amber – Electronics is a company that created a unique electronic product called the Amber Phone Charging Station. This product was designed to provide a secure solution for public phone charging. The Amber Phone Charging Station allows users to charge their phones using fingerprint scanning, creating a safer environment compared to public USB ports or traditional free phone charging stations. The product was developed by Bill Shuey and Kyle Byrd, two students from James Madison University, after Bill Shuey encountered a problem when his phone unexpectedly ran out of battery at a restaurant.
However, the Amber Phone Charging Station faced several challenges after appearing on the show Shark Tank. The founding team received negative feedback from investors, including Robert Herjavec, who has a background in cybersecurity and expressed concerns about the reliability of low-end fingerprint scanners. Despite efforts to improve their business model and product, Amber Phone Charging Station ceased operations in December 2015. Nevertheless, the product is still remembered as an example of effort and creativity in addressing real-life problems.
